Scanners
Scanner Workstation Maintainence
In general, remind students to
- remove jewelry to avoid scratching the scanner glass.
- check their scanner settings before they start, and every few scans to make sure they aren't reverting to the default or have inadvertently changed something.
- report problems to you promptly.
However, also make sure the students know to both reboot machines and try to recreate their problems before they come running to you.
If possible, all workstations need to be working all the time. We have backup scanners if needed.
Weekly
- The scanners platens should be brushed for debris and cleaned.
Monthly
- The scanners should be calibrated.
- The scanners should be checked to make sure that no strange settings are being used. This has to be done visually on the Epsons. On the Microteks there is a "Revert" button under the D-range setting. The idea is to get the most basic/unadulterated scan possible.
- Previously calibrated profiles should be deleted so as not to confuse people. Or, an alternative to this would be to apply a date in addition the file name/profile name.
- Calibrate monitors using the Adobe utility.
- Update and run Ad-aware
- Update and run Spybot
- Make sure Officescan is updating virus patterns properly. This should be automatic, if not it need to be reported to Systems.
- Scan the C:\ drive for tiffs and try to determine if any of the tiffs are lost work. If not delete them.
- Defragment the drive.
- Although the Systems department pushes Windows Updates automatically, you will need to double check to make sure their update software is working properly. Go here to see if they are keeping current.
Calibration: Flatbed Scanners
When? Every Tuesday.
How?
Calibration: Panasonic KVS2046C High Speed Paper Scanners
- You need a 8 1/2 x 8 3/4 piece of white paper (preferably glossy, but not necessarily), the Panasonic driver utilities, and operation manual CD.
- Put the piece of paper into the scanner, wide end first.
- Browse the CD to the ShadingUtilities (something like that) folder, inside of which is an executable file of the same name.
- Run it. The password is "GOSHADING".
- When the calibration process is finished, close the program, and try a new scan using the usual scanning process.
- If you still can't scan, open the User Utility program (Start->Programs->Panasonic...).
- It will say "please clean the rollers" in red letters at the top.
- Look near the bottom of that window, where there is a label "After Clean Roller" and a button next to it that says "Clear Counter".
- Click the button.
- It will ask for confirmation-- go ahead.
- Close that program.
- Try a new scan.
- Should work this time.
Troubleshooting: Flatbed Scanners
Adobe Photoshop closes immediately after opening.

Adobe Photoshop reports that it cannot detect TWAIN.
- Shut down the computer.
- Wait a moment.
- Turn the Epson scanner on.
- Power up the computer.
Scanner scans on its own, even if the computer is logged off.
- Check the SCSI cable: it may be crimped.
- Check the SCSI terminator: it may be time for a new one.
