Virus Protection
Installing
Once a computer is on the network, you must immediately install virus protection. Our current weapon of choice is McAfee.
- Copy this network folder to the desktop: \\Smathersnt2r\Departments\ReadOnly\McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.
- Run its Setup.exe file.
- Click Yes if it prompts to uninstall the old TrendOffice virus protection software.
- Select Typical for the installation type (as far as I know).
- Click Finish, leaving the two check boxes checked.
- It updates itself, then runs a scan over the local drive for 20 minutes or so.
- When it prompts you to restart, restart.
- Logon again, and let it do what it needs to do.
- Move that folder to the Recycle Bin.
Checking
This is how to check if the virus protection software is up-to-date.
- Right click the V-shield icon in the lower right corner of the desktop.
- Select About VirusScan Enterprise... from the pop-up menu.
- A window will open up showing- among other things- a date. New updates are released every Thursday afternoon. If your date is no older than that, then you are up-to-date, unless a special release has been made.
Updating
This is how to update the virus protection software.
- Any logon will work, student or staff: you don't need a Systems liaison.
- Right click the V-shield icon in the lower right corner of the desktop.
- Select Update Now... from the pop-up menu.
That's it. A window will open up, and it will run the updates by itself. All you need to do is not interfere with it.
