Digital Library Center Technologies :: Internal Documentation

Adding New Institutions in the UFDC Manager:

  • If work will be done through the traditional DLC methods, rather than employing a separate dLOC-like toolbox:
    • Add the institution to the Tracking Database directly, adding the institution and its institution code.
    • Make sure new institution's BIBID code does not conflict using the spreadsheet found here.
  • If work will only be done by partners or only by editing existing files (metadata updates):
    • Enter the holding and source code (along with statement) into the Toolbox or Metadada Editor.  The Metadata Editor no longer restricts to the values in the drop down list.
    • When the item loads into UFDC, if it is a new code, it will be added automatically to the institution page and defaults to active (now).
  • To use the institutional page:
    • Under the institutions folder, create a new folder named with the institution code.
    • Create the design folder, banners, home page text, etc. under the institutions folder.

Adding New Interfaces for UFDC:

  1. Under the "interfaces" folder, create a folder amed with the new interface code.
  2. Edit/create/style these files: header.html, header_item.html, footer.html, and footer_item.html
Design and text the new interface under ?n=new so that changes can be seen without a reset. Once finalized, move the "new" into the appropriate folder.
  3. Create a new institution code if needed (see above for steps).
  4. Use the new version (2/9) of UFDC Manager to add the new interface.

Adding New Collections in the UFDC Manager:

  1. Add the collection using the UFDC Manager (and using a descriptive, unique name)
  2. Add into collection enumeration in  UFDC2.xsd on the web (\\Smathersnt12\dlcweb\metadata\ufdc2 )
  3. Load first item(s)
  4. Once the greenstone collection is built, it can be activated.
  5. Once active:
    1. Contact Cataloging to create collection level record
    2. Contact the Public Information Officer to have a "highlight" image and link added to the Libraries' home page

Digital Library Center: UFDC Customized Views

UFDC allows for customized views based on holding location. There are several examples here.

Interface Priority

Interface views are assigned based on this ranking (lower number always takes priority over higher numbers):

  • Interface (if available, with override flag) - 1
  • Institutions - 2
  • Collection - 3

The interface design options, along with elements from the UFDC Collection Manager, will be among the first parts of UFDC's internal operations that will become controllable through a web interface.
