Browsing Books by Dewey Decimal Classification
At the Education Library, some older materials are still arranged by Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), but will eventually be reclassed using Library of Congress Classification. Many school and public libraries still use the DDC class. Below is a guide for browsing by call number.
The system is made up of ten main classes or categories, each divided into ten secondary classes or subcategories, each having ten subdivisions of its own.
000-099 |
Generalities: encyclopedias, periodicals, newspapers, Internet, museums, general works |
100-199 |
Philosophy : psychology, logic, ethics |
200-299 |
Religion : Bible, theology, church doctrine, mythology |
300-399 |
Social Sciences : sociology, economics, law, education, shopping, folk tales |
400-499 |
Language : dictionaries, grammars, readers, all languages |
500-599 |
Pure Sciences : mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry |
600-699 |
Technology : health, cooking, engineering, agriculture, aircraft, pets, business |
700-799 |
The Arts: architecture, sculpture, painting, music, sports |
800-899 |
Literature: poetry, drama and essays in all language |
900-999 |
Geography & History : general geography, travel, histories of all countries and ages |
Note: Look for Education subject materials in the 370-379 Dewey Decimal call numbers.
