The GIS Special Information Services Unit of the University of Florida Libraries is hosting UF's inaugural GIS Day on Wednesday, November 14, 2007. This all day event will showcase the use of GIS to the academic community and the public.

GIS Day is an international event where local GIS users and experts join together to share how GIS is used in their community every day. GIS Day events often include lectures, software demonstrations, map galleries, games, and activities. More than 80 countries celebrate GIS Day by having corporate open houses, hands-on workshops, community expos, school assemblies, and more.

All sessions will be held in Smathers Library (East) Room 1A on the University of Florida Campus. For a complete schedule of our GIS Day events and speakers, please see our full agenda. The morning will begin with a series of presentations and discussions of the basics of GIS. The afternoon activities will begin with poster sessions where attendees can examine relevant research and ongoing projects that showcase GIS. After the poster sessions there will be an opportunity to participate in a game of geocaching. Participates will learn to use GPS to hunt down treasure.

Call for Posters!

We are currently soliciting volunteers willing to put together and participate in the poster session during the later part of the day. We are especially interested in presenting a wide array of different uses for GIS to inspire the audience to incorporate GIS into their everyday lives. If you would like to present a poster, please contact Carol McAuliffe at 352-273-2825 or Dr. Hesham Monsef at 352-273-0366 for instructions and to give a brief summary of the subject of your poster.
