The central role played by newspapers and other mass media in the development of the state of Florida is a long and wide-ranging story, with a history stretching back as far as the late 18th century. Each successive generation of journalists has reported that “first draft of history” which has become a valuable historical record of the state. The history of the fourth estate in Florida provides a glimpse into the people and events that had, and continue to have, an enormous influence on the development of the state.
