Saints

Giorgi, Rosa. Saints in Art. ed. by Stefano Zuffi Los Angeles: J. Paul Getty Museum. 2003.
UF
Architecture & Fine Arts Library Reference (Non-Circulating) ND1430 .G5513 2003

Saints in Art begins with an alphabetical table of contents that lists all the saints. The rear appendices of the work is arranged according to the following topics:

•  Sources
•  Symbols & attributes (i.e. a saint's symbol is a fish, book, etc.)
•  Protectors & patrons (i.e. patron saint of children)

This work and the one called Gospel Figures in Art (Zuffi), both have the same layout since they are done by the same publisher. Each saint has about a one page biography. The margins give quick pieces of important information about that particular saint. Information includes:

•  Name
•  Etymology of their name
•  Dates of the saints' earthly life and their geographic location
•  Characteristics & activities (what they were like, what things they founded, etc.)
•  Who they are the patron saint of (i.e. children)
•  Connections with other saints
•  Veneration
•  Feast day

One other useful feature of these guides is that they offer various pictures of how the saint is portrayed in works of art (i.e. paintings). Each piece of art is labeled with brief explanations as to why it is important. These explanations will help guide the novice or student to better understand this type of art.
