Volume 115 covers medieval philosophy and is done by an acknowledged scholar in the field.   This text is a great starting point for students to learn the important philosophical ideas of the Middle Ages.   The front contains an alphabetical list of philosophers by name, but is a little confusing since sometimes their first name is used and other times it is their last names.   The articles within this work are very well done and include the author's principle works, editions, critical information, and their birth & death dates.   The end of each entry has a bibliography, references, and manuscript information.

Other Web sites:

   Medieval Logic & Philosophy

   Indiana University
Paul Vincent Spade, Professor of Philosophy
   http://pvspade.com/Logic/

Professor Spade's areas of specialization for research include mediaeval philosophy, mediaeval logic, and semantic theory. One of the most useful parts of this site is the 'Links' page. Many of the well known medieval gateways are listed here, as well as links for more focused topics. Students will be happy to know that there is a listing of Online texts, course materials, and scholar's homepages. For those seeking more resources in this field, there is a section for journals, as well as a list of relevant societies and institutions.

Another very useful feature of this site happens to be the free downloads (PDF format) that are available regarding the topics of medieval logic and philosophy. Some of them are course materials that professor Spade has used in past classes, while others are translations of texts he has worked on.

Finally, this site contains a large directory (containing names, affiliations, & E-mails) for those working in the field of medieval logic & philosophy. Students may want to look at some of the bulletin boards with discussions on medieval topics.

Note: Because medieval philosophy is often connected with religion, see also these sites for information on Christian philosophers (i.e. Augustine, Aquinas, etc.)

   New Advent Catholic Website
   http://www.newadvent.org/

The strength of this site rests in the massive amount of information available on medieval philosophers.   The 'Church Fathers' link gives a massive alphabetically list of many great writers from antiquity and the Middle Ages.   Major authors like Augustine and Aquinas have vast amounts of their works full-text.   The home page also includes a link directly to Aquinas' Summa Theologica.   Also of interest on the main page is full-text access of the Catholic Encyclopedia.   Drawbacks of the site include links that are slow or fail to load.   Finally, one has to take the paid advertisements in the side-bars with a grain of salt.

   Christian Classics Ethereal Library
   http://www.ccel.org/

The Ethereal Library offers full-text coverage for works of the church fathers (e.g. St. Augustine's City of God--see 'Chuch Fathers' link on left hand side of the page).    The 'Encyclopedia of Christianity' offers links to full-text topics in a massive, A-Z listing.   This format can aid in finding personalities and is also browseable.   Many of the entries are linked into the Catholic Encyclopedia on the New Advent Website (see above entry).

   A Companion to the Summa
   http://www.op.org/farrell/companion/

This site attempts to render Aquinas' Summa Theologica into a more modern and readable version for the layperson.   This translation is the work of Fr. Walter Farrell almost 70 years ago.

Patrologia Latina covers philosophical and theological writings from 200 A.D. up to the year 1216 A.D.   It contains bibliographic information from works concerning monastic, philological, and theological learning.   This work has citations, abstracts, and full-text.

The database contains an electronic version of the first edition of Jacques-Paul Migne's Patrologia Latina published between 1844 and 1855 and the four volumes of indexes published between 1862 and 1865. The Patrologia Latina comprises the works of the Church Fathers from Tertullian in 200 AD to the death of Pope Innocent III in 1216. It contains the complete Patrologia Latina, including all prefatory material, original texts, critical apparatus and indexes. Migne's column numbers are also included (an essential references for scholars).
