Course Description
The main goal of this Research Methods course is to give students the practical knowledge of how to find and use information for conducting effective research. Through a combination of lectures, discussion, and hands-on searching assignments, students will discover how to identify the most relevant library resources (both print & electronic) and develop effective search strategies to find quality information. Although the theme in this course centers on the subject of the Middle Ages, the skills acquired in this class can be applied to research in any discipline or course.
Course Objectives (skills students will learn from this class)
- How to take a broad research topic and turn it into a focused & manageable thesis.
- Write an effective annotated bibliography.
- Correctly cite sources.
- Be able to properly evaluate resources to determine if they are scholarly/reliable.
- Learn the most important reference works in the field to gain valuable background information on a topic.
- Effectively search the library catalog to find books & other material.
- How to find & successfully use databases containing journal articles.
- Discover quality Internet resources for your research.
