H&SS Services Department, UF Smathers Libraries (Public Use)

Library West supports the information and research needs of students, faculty, staff, and emphasis in the humanities and social sciences. Our goal is to assist each patron in becoming a more knowledgeable and efficient library user.

Library West provides research assistance and instruction/outreach services that cover the Library Catalog, periodical indexes, electronic databases, and traditional library sources. Subject Specialists within H&SSS share their specialized knowledge of information resources.

Research assistance is available in person at each library or by appointment, and by telephone, email and Ask a Librarian IM (instant messaging).
Instruction is provided in general library instruction classes and through course-specific library sessions developed by instructional librarians. Individual instruction and assistance is also available at all locations.
Orientation programs introduce library services and resources. Schedules are posted in each library at the beginning of every term.
Special services for faculty
- provide information packets for new faculty outlining library services and naming library subject specialist
- work closely with faculty to select materials for the collections
- assist with specialized research or major research projects
- teach course-specific library instruction sessions
Special services for users with disabilities are provided to assist physically challenged patrons in their use of the collections.
