ALEPH
On May 10, 2004, the UF Libraries Catalog switched over to a powerful library management system (software) named ALEPH. WebLUIS is being phased out across the state.

Book Drop
What happened to the Library West book drop? The drive-up book drop has been relocated to Buckman Drive, just south of University Avenue. Library books may be left there or returned to any other campus library. Check the map for library locations.

Change
Change is not available in Library West. To change a large bill, go to the Cashier's Office at Criser Hall or the Campus Book Store, during normal business hours.

Where are the computers in Library West?
The information commons is located on the third floor of Library West. The computers offer web browsing, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, scanning, CD burners and other software. Some workstations have web development and image processing software. See the Information Commons homepage for more information.

Classes
The Humanities & Social Sciences librarians will continue to offer instruction in use of library databases, researching, etc. Classes are held in classrooms located on the second floor of Library West (rooms 211 and 212). Please contact the appropriate reference librarian or subject specialist for details.

Copy Cards
To print at a computer or a microform reader/printer, or to make copies at a photocopier, a copy card is necessary. Purchase copy cards at dispensers in Library West, Marston Science Library, etc. The cost of a copy card is $1.00... 35 cents for the card, leaving you with 65 cents for copying. You may add more value to the card at the dispenser. Cards can be purchased with $5.00, $10.00 and $20.00 bills.

Course Evaluations
Course evaluations are available online, as well as at the circulation desk and on microfiche in the Microform room.

Call Numbers
Dewey Decimal Classification System
DDC is the system devised by Melvil Dewey to classify books, journals, and other library materials by their subject area. These call numbers start with numbers. For example, 812.521 P247K. This system is no longer used for new items at UF.
Library of Congress Classification Schedule
LC is the system of organization used by the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. to classify materials by subject area. LC call numbers start with letters, for example, TL 501 .A8.

Email: I can't delete my messages!
Many library computers in the information commons of Smathers Library allow users to check their mail, but are not set to access the mailserver where messages are stored. If users need help with deleting mail, etc., the computer assistants in any of the CIRCA labs offer individualized help.

FAX Machines
Faxing services are available at the Reitz Union, at Do It Reitz and the Career Resource Center.

Internet Cafes in Gainesville
Mail Boxes Etc., at 3324 W. University Avenue, is the closest location with Internet computers for hire. Phone: 376-9999.

Patents or Patent Searching
Search the United States Patent and Trademark Office How to Search page, or use the links from Marston Science Library's Patents, Trademarks & Copyrights subject guide.

Proxy
A proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary between a user and the Internet so that the library can ensure security as well as administrative control. Why is a proxy server necessary? The library subscribes to many information resources (i.e. Academic Search Premier, Lexis-Nexis, etc.) that restrict access to users with a library or campus workstation address. This is problematic for students, faculty and staff connecting from at home or other locations via non-UF ISPs. Users that connect to the Internet via Cox Cable or AOL will have a non-UF workstation address and often not be able to connect. Logging onto the proxy server enables these users to reach these information sources.

Once logged on, the proxy server is invisible to the user, and the user can continue to search or navigate on the Internet as before.Users must have an activated library card (or a Gator1 account) to log on to the library proxy server.

Reference Collection
The reference collection for humanities and social sciences is located on the third floor of Library West.

Typewriters
Approximately twenty typewriters are still available at the Reitz Student Activities Center, 300 JWRU. Call 392-1671 for hours of availability.

Where are the videos and DVDs?
A large collection of motion pictures and documentaries are available in VHS DVD formats, and are housed on the second floor of Library West. Search for movies by name in the UF Libraries Catalog or use the print directory at the reference desk.

What happened to WebLUIS?
WebLUIS has been replaced with a new statewide library computer system called ALEPH. Library users can create their own accounts to save searches, renew their books, and save personalized bibliographies of their favorite books and information sources. For assistance with the new UF Libraries catalog software, please consult librarians via RefeXpress, e-mail or at any service desk.
