GIS, Maps and Imagery

Definition of GIS

A Geographic Information System, or GIS is an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information.

A GIS gives you the ability to associate information with a geographic feature and to create new relationships that can determine the suitability of various sites for development, evaluate environmental impact, identify the best location for a new facility, and so on. For example, by using land use and cover data from several years, drainage basin boundaries, soils data, rainfall data and the universal soil loss equation, impacts of human activity can be measured.

Different Purposes, Sources, and Reliability of Digital Spatial Data

  Federal, State, Local, Private

Users Should Quality Check All Data for Positional Accuracy and Attribute Completeness

Different Digital Data Collection Scales and Uses

Small Scale / Large Area Regional Analysis (1:100,000)

Large Scale / Small Area Local Analysis (1:24,000)

Different Coordinate Systems (Geographic vs Projected)

  Latitude/Longitude Global/Spherical Reference System

  Projection Plane/Surface Grid Coordinate System

Every Layer Must Share a Common Coordinate System

Cartography --

"The discipline of cartography combines science, aesthetics, and technical ability to create a balanced and readable representation that is capable of communicating information effectively and quickly."

Considerations: Maps use symbols to represent spatial information through colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes.
