Orientation to the UF Libraries

Libraries use classification to group materials such as books, periodicals, maps and audiovisual materials according to their subject. This enables researchers to browse the library's collection by subject areas such as psychology, history or type of literature. Both Library of Congress and Dewey classification group journals and books by subject area.

Here are guides to the subject areas in Library of Congress (LC) and in Dewey Decimal (DDC) classification systems. The Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia of knowledge, offers more background on the Library of Congress and Dewey classifications.
