Brief Recs button

What is BriefRecs?

Clicking on the Brief Recs button arranges records in a Browse List results set in a way that makes particular items easier to locate. For example, records under an author heading are sorted by title and then date; records under a title heading are sorted by author and then date; series are sorted in volume number order. All variations of a given work, including translations, appear together in the Brief Recs list.

In contrast, when you click on the author or title heading in the Entry column of a Browse List, records in the results set are sorted by publication year, with the most recent appearing first.

Brief Recs is most useful for author or title headings that retrieve large results sets, such as:

  • Authors who have written a large number of works (e.g. shakespeare william)
  • [Brief Records - Author screen]

  • Titles that have many editions or variations (e.g. Gone withthe Wind)
  • [Brief Records - Title screen]

  • Series that include many volumes (e.g. Acta Horticulturae).
  • [Brief Records - Series screen]
Brief Recs is also useful when you want a shorter work that may be included in a collection, such as a musical piece on a recording of several works. The Brief Recs lists the title of the shorter work rather than the title of the collection.

In addition to the Previous Page and Next Page buttons, you can navigate through a long Brief Recs list via the Jump to Text box to locate items faster in a long list of records.

Jump to Text is not the equivalent of "find keyword on this page", but it will help you navigate up and down a long Brief Recs list. For example, in the Brief Recs list for "shakespeare, william", you may type Romeo and click Jump to Text and you will be taken to the beginning of "romeo" in the list. If you type juliet in the Jump to Text box, you will be taken to "julius" (as the next closest beginning match) rather than "romeo and juliet".
