Using the UF Libraries' Catalog

Basic Search

When you first connect to the UF Libraries' Catalog, you are presented with the Basic Search screen for searching the FULL CATALOG*.

[Basic Search screen]

Search for Keyword(s) allows you to search for terms that appear anywhere in the title, subject, author or other fields in the catalog records. You may use ? or * to truncate (shorten) your search terms to retrieve more results. For example, searching for nurs? will retrieve records with the words nurse, nurses, nursing, etc.

You may change the Exact Phrase? button to Yes to search keywords in a phrase, such as "New York City". However, use Browse Organized Lists (below) when your "phrase" is the exact beginning of a title, such as "Gone with the Wind."

Browse Organized Lists lets you browse alphabetical lists of titles, authors, subject headings or other specialized indexes to help you locate the materials you need.

For more tips on when to use "Search for Keyword" or "Browse Organized Lists", click the [I-Ball] above each search box.

*Options to Searching the FULL CATALOG: You may choose to search only the subset JOURNALS/SERIALS Catalog, or one of the other available subsets. See Change Databases for other subset options.
