Examples of Customized Workshops

The following are examples of the type of workshops that librarians can offer your class or group. If you are interested in scheduling one of these workshops, make arrangements with one of the instruction coordinators or subject specialists.

Finding Visual Information

This class focuses on tools for finding visual information such as portraits, illustrations, photographs, charts, maps, drawings, art reproductions, etc. Discussion will range from relatively low-tech approaches (using illustrations and reproductions indexes, interpreting bibliographic records to find visual content) to strategies for searching databases. Particular attention will be given to finding visual content on the World Wide Web.

Research Process

Just what are all those "books" in the library? Encyclopedias, monographs, periodical articles, research reports, conference proceedings, government documents, dictionaries, handbooks, directories, biographical sources, etc.! Learn when to use what, and why.

Searching Databases

Learn the basic steps to conducting any search in any online database: selecting databases, constructing search statements, refining searches, and processing results. Identify the functions and features common across all online database services. Build your confidence in tackling unfamiliar databases and systems.

UF Libraries Catalog

Learn to use the UF Libraries' Catalog to find books, journals and other materials owned by the Libraries. Covers searching by author, title, and topic; how to combine key words using Boolean logic; and where to find the materials in the Libraries.

Government Information

Want to find out who is the richest person in the Senate? Which members of Congress graduated from the University of Florida? What is the population projection for Gainesville? You can find the answers using a vast array of free government information search engines and websites along with the library's subscription databases. See a demonstration of government sources such as GPO Access Online, FedStats, and THOMAS. The subscription databases Academic Universe, Congressional Universe, and Statistical Universe will also be demonstrated. Some hands-on experience will be allowed if time permits.

Citation Databases in Web of Science
(Science, Social Science, and Arts & Humanities)

Marvel at the enhanced features provided in the Web version of ISI's Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Index. See how often your books and journal articles have been cited by others. Learn to navigate through the literature, locate items that share cited references in common, and conduct cited reference searches on secondary authors.

Spanish Paleography and Archival Research Methodology

This research methods seminar concentrates on the historical archives of Spain, Mexico and Cuba, and documents dating back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

RefWorks

RefWorks is an online database that works as a compiler, formatter, and creator of research citations and bibliographies. RefWorks interacts with nearly all UF Libraries' electronic databases, allowing you to import citations straight from the source into your personal bibliography. Learn how RefWorks interacts with library databases, how it can be set to manage your research, how it can create bibliographies and insert endnotes and footnotes into your papers.
