This guided provides information about archival records, manuscript collections and other primary historical documents available to scholars researching the individuals and organizations germane to the history of journalism in Florida. The majority of these collections are held by institutions within Florida, although several are located in other states.

Press Association, including photographs and clippings. Also included are articles from the "Too Late to Classify" column
and articles concerning the Tamiami Trail Blazers Expedition of 1923. These papers can be useful in studying the Florida

Contents: The collection consists chiefly of the personal correspondence of Varnum Family members and other correspondents circa
1841-1927, with the bulk of the materials from the family's Jacksonville period of 1877 to 1888. Covers his tenure as
publisher and city editor for the Daily Times and the Times-Union (1882-1886), and his tenure as publisher of the
Jacksonville Morning News and News-Herald (1886-1887). Also covers his management of the Florida Literary and News
Bureau and his representation of the United Press in 1888.

Contents: This series contains videotapes and scripts of the television program "Today in the Legislature" produced by Florida Public Broadcasting. The program consists of daily highlights of the legislative session. The scripts cover programs from 1975 to 1983. The series is incomplete from 1975 to 1978, with only a few videos available. The videotapes from 1978 to 1988 are only available in one inch reel-to-reel type C format. Beginning in 1989, the videotapes are on Beta-cam broadcast videocassettes.

Contents: Organized into the following series: I. "Historical files" photographic prints, 1920s; II. Nixon Smiley negatives, 1950s; III. 35mm negatives, 1962-1981. The Historical file contains 340 photographic prints by Richard B. Hoit, mainly 1920s aerial views of Miami and Miami Beach, and two albums of Miami Beach by Claude C. Matlack. Nixon Smiley series includes negatives shot by Smiley while he was gardening editor in the 1950s. Views are of plants, animals, agriculture (sugar, vegetables, etc.), and natural areas in South Florida, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Central America, and Caracas. The 35mm negatives, 1.75 linear ft., are primarily of the Republican and Democratic national conventions on Miami Beach, 1972. Also represented are presidential visits to Dade County (Kennedy in 1963, Johnson in 1964); Governor Hayden Burns inauguration, 1965; Bay of Pigs prisoners return to Miami, 1962; disasters (Viking Princess in 1966, Eastern jet in 1972, etc.); McDuffie motorcycle trial in Tampa, 1981; and Haitian refugees dead on South Florida beaches, 1981.
