  1. Music wiring - several phases, now entering the punchdown phase, actual punchdown takes about 30 seconds, test and repair times vary - probably 3 hours left to complete the project. Current wiring contractor is subject to Political pulls which interrupts their work. Choices in time and quality versus cost.
  2. MSL - First to fifth floor, increased building capacity, more in West. Total estimate by Orlando group was $39,000. Gresch is booked through the end of the fiscal year. Funding is from the FCLA Infrastructure funds - decision is workstations versus wiring
  3. Rick delivered the net map for Education. NERDC is still trying to find the fiber, UFNET left no maps
Internet II Consortium

  1. The Internet was originally a Dept of Defense research, started at 1 megahertz, now at 45 megahertz, originally 300 to 1200 baud modems, static caused errors - Government financed Internet of today to correct, now its grown, needs to be faster to move larger files, chicken and egg type thing. Internet II Consortium is a relatively small group of Universities and Institutions who guarantee to transmit and receive data, exact plan and speed is not resolved yet - 1 GB being considered, UF is committed to being a part. T1 to 10M cost $170,000, to increase to 25M investment could be 1/2 to 1 million. Plan to build 1 point receiving station on Campus, backbone could carry, would need to interconnect. Timetable has not been set. SuperComputing is part of this. Robert Metcalf, Father of Ethernet, has been predicting brown outs and crashes, lots of clogs. FIRN doing upgrades lost South Florida again. The Internet is not reliable enough to push large files through, more commercial than us. Utility companies have established their own fiber networks, major new carrier is going to lay their own fiber network, more will be built

Mail Systems

  1. NT servers will be used as the backbone for Library Information System. Current mail systems drawbacks - cost and limits i.e. disk full problems. NERDC is pulling back from support of the current mail system, CIRCA has moved to UNIX and Novell
  2. PH system on mainframe, accessing from the Ready prompt by entering PH lastname firstname of the person you are inquiring about. Brings up personal info, provides an alias(pointers to multiple names). PH may be used to prevent our having to keep changing addresses - provides auto alias firstname-lastname - can send mail to current mail address - try to migrate to give alias to outside people - @firstname-lastname.ufl.edu. UNF is going through this now, mail bouncing. Unknown if there is a limit on characters, PH has a way to change your alias, try for awhile, send test mail to yourself, will see message STMP forwarding. If it works can change the pointers, opportunity to change alias if you want to, will have to be unique. EMAIL address field needs to be there, some longtime staff and some new staff don't have an EMAIL address there, very easy experimentation, does have some holes in it, no password. Intent is to move from NERDC. EMAIL field update requires mail be sent to person who fixes/changes - UF wants to have authority to control updates/changes. WEB interface is more graphic.


  1. Some are using micro based clients for EMAIL - need to be aware that these are downloads to the desktop which turns the mail into a file. There is no password protection on the desktop. Public record - no right to privacy or confidentiality. Could copy to floppy, delete from the desktop and put the floppy in your pocket to secure it. Downloaded files are no more secure than the desktop is. EMAIL public retention obligations are the same if moved off the mainframe to the desktop. Security camera film falls under the public record retention laws.

Internet Browser Caches

  1. Internet browsers, Netscape and Explorer, create disk caches which don't go away when the session is closed, can be brought up and looked it later, rewrites the cache when it runs out of space, some save URL addresses - could be used as a breadcrumb trail. Configuration option - under files or directories - can configure to not use, recycle or use your own judgment - update and service changes don't save changes configurations, can cause problems when updating. Cache usually takes 3M to 5M, recommend you use application to flush the cache, do not do manually, can trash the wrong cache.
