About SciFinder Scholar
The George A. Smathers Libraries provide access for UF faculty, staff, and students to SciFinder, a program that provides access to the following Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) databases:
- Chemical Abstracts: comprehensive indexing of chemical literature, 1907-present
- Registry: chemical structures, names, synonyms, some calculated and experimental properties
- CASREACT: single and multistep organic reactions, 1840-present
- CHEMLIST: regulatory information on chemicals
- CHEMCAT: commercial availability of chemicals from major suppliers
- MEDLINE: biomedical literature, 1951-present
SciFinder includes journal articles, book chapters, patents, conference proceedings, technical reports, and dissertations. Users may search by author name, research topic, molecular formula, chemical structure/substructure, or chemical reaction.
See instructions for using the new Web version at the SciFinder Scholar website, including How-To Guides, tutorials, and CAS e-Seminars. View the SciFinder Scholar Tutorial for instruction on searching with the Client version.
Accessing SciFinder Scholar
To use SciFinder Scholar, you must:
- Be current faculty, staff or registered student at the University of Florida.
- Use SFS for academic research only; no use for commercial purposes is allowed.
- Have no more than 5,000 records downloaded and stored electronically at any time.
- Delete stored records when no longer needed for the relevant research project or after the completion of your degree program, whichever occurs first.
Please read complete details. You will be asked to acknowledge these requirements each time you log on. Violation of the license by any user could result in a termination of the license for all users at the University of Florida.
UF currently offers 2 ways to get to SciFinder, and we encourage you to set up both.
- SciFinder Web (introduced in 2009). Complete the one-time registration using your ufl.edu email address; then within 48 hours accept the confirmation from CAS (which may go to your spam folder). Then go to https://scifinder.cas org/ and login with the username and password you set up. You must login each time you use SciFinder Web.
- SciFinder Scholar 2007 "Client." Download the client software and install it on your computer. Then launch SciFinder Scholar from your computer; there is no login requirement for the client.
