| New electronic course reserve system | |
The George A. Smathers
Libraries introduce a new electronic course reserve system for the spring
semester called ERes (pronounced E-rez). The new system enables faculty to
structure and manage their own library course reserve site with the ability to
add documents via fax, add hyperlinks, and communicate with students through
e-mail and bulletin board features. ERes can also link within course management
software such as WebCT.
University librarians and
instructional technologists assisted in the design of ERes, creating a simple
and easy to learn system that facilitates the faculty provision of – and
student access to – reserve materials.
Dr. Lamont Flowers, College of
Education faculty member, was among a select number of experienced reserve users
to help develop the system processes during the fall semester.
“ERes enabled my students to download important course material via the
Internet,” stated Dr. Flowers. “Overall, I think ERes is an excellent
addition to the ever-evolving library, research, and instructional resources
available to faculty and students at UF. Also, I was pleased with the technical
support I received from Damon Austin in the Education Library, who helped me to
set up my ERes account and provided informative tutorials.”
ERes is in use at numerous
universities across the United States, including Iowa State University, Duke
University, Bucknell University, University of Illinois, Chicago, SUNY,
Binghamton and the University of New Mexico.
UF library staff will hold
faculty workshops to explain how to submit materials and manage sites using the
new system. The next workshop will be on Thursday, December 18 at 10:00 a.m. in
Marston Science Library, room 308. In addition, the ERes Web site – http://eres.uflib.ufl.edu/
-- provides details for use of the system.
