Comics and Childhood exhibit in Special Collections
The exhibit “Comics and Childhood: from Katzenjammer to Klarion” is open in the Smathers Library Exhibit Gallery, 2nd floor, through March 3, 2006. The exhibit highlights the comics holdings in the Department of Special and Area Studies Collections and was prepared by three Ph.D. students from the UF English department.
In association with the Graduate Comics Organization’s 4th annual comics conference, titled Comics and Childhood, the exhibit is the project of three Ph.D. students in the English department. It draws from over 150 years of material from a variety of collections, including the Baldwin Collection, the Penny and Sol Davidson Collection, and the Don Ault Collection, as well as several items donated specially for this exhibit. Highlights of the exhibit include a 1946 issue of "Highlights for Children" featuring the first appearance of Goofus and Gallant; a copy of the new "Little Nemo in Slumberland: So Many Splendid Sundays" collection; and a copy of the first use of a character named Superman by Joe Siegel and Jerry Shuster, the self-published short story "Reign of the Super-Man."
Two UF librarians will participate in panel discussions at the conference and all staff are invited to attend. All events are free and open to the public.
