Libraries sponsor haiku contest
To celebrate National Poetry Month and National Library Week, April 2-8, the George A. Smathers Libraries are sponsoring a haiku contest through March 31. The theme is libraries and their content (books, stories, reading, databases, microfiche, etc.).
Winners will receive an Albert & Alberta READ poster and have their poems printed on library bookmarks and on a Web site.
Send haiku entries to marsalc@uflib.ufl.edu or drop an entry card found at each information desk into any library comment box by 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2006.
Contest Rules:
• Entrants must be currently enrolled UF students (local or distance learners welcome).
• The panel will use the traditional standard definition of haiku form -- three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable count. They will not require that a season be involved.
• Winners must allow the libraries to print their poems on the Web site and bookmarks. The libraries will not seek to retain copyright of said work, aside from use on the Web site and on bookmarks.
• Winners have the option of having their names published on the bookmarks, but must be identified on the Web site.
• Winners will be determined by the George A. Smathers Libraries’ PR and Marketing committee and their decisions will be final.
