Call for readers for libraries’ fifth annual Read-A-Thon

Celebrate reading by sharing a story, poem or excerpt from a favorite book during the George A. Smathers Libraries’ Read-A-Thon April 9-12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Plaza of the Americas between Library West and Smathers Library (East).

The Read-A-Thon is a lively, fast-paced and casual celebration of reading.

Here’s how it works: Each day, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., (except Tuesday which is children’s day and begins at 10:00) UF faculty, staff and students, along with community members read ten-minute segments from their favorite book. Listeners meander in and out to listen for a few minutes or for an hour. Monday is designated as international day, Tuesday is children’s literature day, Wednesday is Florida history day and Thursday is open topic day.

Two other library-sponsored events will also take place on the Plaza this year. An “Edible Book Contest” is planned for Thursday. Anyone can enter an “edible book” to be judged and later eaten. Prizes will be given. The Digital Library Center is sponsoring a display of images from the 34th Street Wall dating back to 1989 called Concrete Blog: Messages on the Wall.

For more information on the Read-A-Thon and related events, sign up to read or enter an edible book, see http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/readathon.
