Call for readers for libraries’ sixth annual Read-A-Thon

Celebrate reading by sharing a story, poem or excerpt from a favorite book during the George A. Smathers Libraries’ Read-A-Thon April 14-17 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Plaza of the Americas between Library West and Smathers Library (East).

The Read-A-Thon is a lively, fast-paced and casual celebration of reading during National Library Week.

Here’s how it works: Each day from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., (except Tuesday which is children’s day and begins at 10:00) UF faculty, staff and students, along with community members will read ten-minute segments from a favorite work of literature. Listeners meander in and out to listen for a few minutes or for an hour. Monday is designated as humor day, Tuesday is children’s literature from 10:00-noon and young adult literature from noon-2:00 p.m., Wednesday is southern living day and Thursday is open topic day with open mic poetry from 1:00-2:00.

The second annual “Edible Book Contest” is planned for Wednesday to coincide with the Read-A-Thon. Anyone can enter an “edible book” to be judged and later eaten. Prizes will be given in various categories.

For more information and/or to sign up for the Read-A-Thon and the Edible Book Contest, see http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/readathon.
