As we have discussed in Library Council, the Libraries are in the process of negotiating a new way of providing mail service to our locations. The major differences will be that the mail delivery to each building will be handled by UF campus mail instead of Libraries staff; postal box numbers will change for most units; and for Libraries units located in shared building space (i.e., Education, AFA, Music, and Journalism), the mail will be delivered to a single point in the building, pre-sorted by department, rather than directly to the unit. This will be a daily mail delivery. By eliminating a handling step within the Libraries, we hope to reduce errors and increase the speed of delivery.
This change will not affect the current so-called courier service performed by the Libraries. We will still continue to make the same deliveries on the same schedule for boxes and parcels. UF is looking at establishing a central courier service for the entire campus, and when that is in place we will evaluate whether it is more effective to use it or continue our own, but this change in mail delivery is not directly related to the courier.
We are still in the process of getting the details of the plan in place, so there is no immediate schedule for implementation. If it continues to look feasible, we want to get it in place as soon as possible, both to secure its anticipated advantages, and to help the campus mail service with its planning. Facilities is contacting all of the Libraries mail stops to explain how this will affect each location if implemented. Any Libraries unit with questions about the process can contact Facilities for more information. ;
