Other than 2004-2005, I suspect that 2003-2004 will be the busiest and most dramatic period in the life of the UF Preservation Department. In addition to the outside influences of the closure of Library West, the opening of LAD, the switch from NOTIS to Aleph and the start of People soft, various Personnel changes within the Department also had a dramatic impact.

STAFF:
· Gus Clifton (Program Assistant in charge of the Camera Room) moved to the DLC. Nelda Schwartz, Reprographics Unit Head and Will Canova, Microfilm Sales Technician, fill the gap. (July 2003)
· Hong Shaddy hired as new Front desk LTA. Duties include database entry and secretarial support. (worked August 2003- January 2004)
· Will Canova promoted to Program Assistant line. Microfilm Sales position (funded by Auxiliary) changed to half time. (September 2003)
· Part time Microfilm sales technician hired. (worked March-June 2004)

STATISTICS:
· Treated 6,500 volumes in freeze dryer
· Encapsulated 800 rare manuscripts and maps
· Commercially bound 23,000 volumes, including a five year backlog of AFA projects in lieu of thesis
· 1,700 volumes microfilmed
· 604 ETD’s added to electronic collection

PROJECTS:
· With group, developed, wrote and taught Introduction to Functional Training class (Aleph)
· Developed, wrote and taught Binding Class (Aleph)
· Immediately post STP, chaired weekly SOS sessions for serials and binding staff (Aleph)
· Supported Access Services during the transition from LW to ALF

STAFF AND USER EDUCATION:
· Conservation exhibit created in first floor Smathers Library Hallway window
· Supported Special Collections in 2nd floor Exhibit case set up
· Open house 2 hours a week in Conservation

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
· Midwinter ALA attended by: Cathy Mook
· Annual ALA attended by: Cathy Mook, Nelda Schwartz, Will Canova, John Freund, Robert Parker
· SOLINET Mold workshop (May 2004): John Freund
· Digital Preservation Management workshop (November 2003): Cathy Mook
· Grant Writing for Preservation workshop (April 2004): Cathy Mook
