Joint A Team and P.I.G. meeting Held 12-12-02 from 2 p.m. to 4p.m. Library East Conference Room Attendees: Paula Tarrant, Carole Bird, Naomi Young, Emily Madden, Carol Whitmer, Pam Williams, Kendra Carter, Rod Uecker, David Hickey, Dan Holt, Judy Rummel, Jason Fleming, Michele Wilbanks-Fox, Doug Kiker, Bobby Parker, Paul Losch, Raimonda Margjioni, Jan Hernberger, Priscilla West, Marcia Martin, Justino Llanque-Chana, Cathy Mook Doug Kiker chaired the meeting. 2. Cathy Mook and Bobby Parker talked briefly about the binding software program called ABLE. ABLE and LARS are the two established binding software programs available in the U.S. Ex Libris, the LMS company that owns Aleph, and the software developers at ABLE have worked together to create a Z39.50 interface between the two programs. This would allow for less rekeying of data and eliminate many, if not all, binding ticket errors. Bobby had ABLE demo discs that he distributed to members who asked for them. There is a link on the commercial library bindery site to information about ABLE if you are interested. 3. Jason Fleming, the new Archivist in the Serials Acquisition Unit, was introduced. He replaces Marie Kennedy. He will be focusing on writing web documentation. 4. Doug had a lap top and projector set up and gave a brief introduction to Aleph to the attendees. 5. A brief update on the progress of the CD-Rom security implementation project was given by Cathy Mook. She passed around the magnetic key and a CD in a case for people to test out themselves. 6. There was discussion on how binding will be affected by the down time on LUIS from the end of March to May 12th, when Aleph is supposed to be up and running. For many smaller branches who do not bind on a regular basis, deferment is a valid option. For those large libraries, LW and MSL in particular, this is not an option. At this point, not enough is known about how Aleph works, what the timing will be and how much access to NOTIS there will be. A meeting of the old Library Binding Committee (LBC) will be scheduled as we get closer to March to discuss some of these details in depth. 7. We have been told that the information contained in the R (receipt) lines and the N (note) lines currently used for check in and claiming of loose periodicals will not transfer to Aleph. They will be available in NOTIS as a read only file so for awhile, staff will have to toggle back and forth to see old NOTIS info and new Aleph info. Thus, for the patron, who will see Aleph only, certain loose issues will not show up anywhere. In the LBC meeting in the spring, we will talk about the implications of this for binding. 8. Doug talked about the Swets Blackwell invoicing. There will be a supplementary invoice every two months now, to keep up with titles that fall through the cracks. 9. The schedule for the A Team meeting will need to be flexible in the coming months. (PIG also!!) submitted by Cathy Mook |
