GOALS OF THE PRESERVATION DEPARTMENT
Fiscal Year 2000/2001

CONSERVATION

GOALS:
  1. Develop procedures for the use of the blast freezer.  .
  2. Document the use of the digital camera and develop an image file to tie into the Registry Database.
  3. Develop procedures for the separate tracking of work from the DLC and from grant funded projects by redesigning the monthly statistical forms.
  4. Continue the updating of the conservation web pages using Front Page 2000.

Primary Contact:
John Freund (johfreu@mail.uflib.ufl.edu)
Objectives:
  • Document the use of, and set up procedures for the use of the blast freezer.
  • Look at such questions as; how will it be used, who will use it, who will be trained in its use, and if used outside the Library, how will we handle the associated costs.
  • Review and revise, in collaboration with the Head of the Preservation Department, the Library Disaster Plan.
Progress:
  • October 2000: Freezer developed some problems that service was needed to correct. It is up and running now and is currently (December) running through a test cycle.
  • December 2000: Procedures now being written for start up. Training of Preservation staff will take place in January 2001.
  • May 2001: Procedures have been written and posted for the basic start-up of the freezer when the primary operator is not available. This is a simple half page sheet.

Progress:
  • December 2000: Camera has been used for Web pages and some documentation. Image file is being set-up.
  • March 2001: Digital camera is being used by different department members. Several image files have been set up for the storing of images. There is a file on NT8 to store treatment record images associated with the Registry but they are not linked and may not be possible or necessary to do with an Access database.
