Create a series of window displays.
Primary Contact:
John Freund  johfreu@mail.uflib.ufl.edu

Objectives:
  • Create a series of different displays using the window cabinet at the end of the      Study hallway in Smathers Library.

  • Change displays at least every two months after the start of Fall Semester.

  •

Progress:
Current window display placed in September 2003. Received many comments on it so I decided to keep it up through Fall semester. Current plans are to replace it every semester.
Current display will be replaced after Christmas break.

2/27/04  Display was changed to the Brittle Book display week of 2/02/04.  Have had a number of good comments regarding it.

Conservation Open House.
Primary Contact:
John Freund  johfreu@mail.uflib.ufl.edu

Objectives:
  • Beginning Fall semester, institute an open house day.  Designate one day a week, between 9-12  or 1-3,  and open the side door to the Conservation area.  A sign will be placed in the hall inviting people in where Rod and I will be working on various projects. We can talk to people, answer questions, give information.

  • Keep statistics and records of questions and comment. Leave open the possibility of expanding the time and or scope, depending on interest.

Progress:
Started having open hours on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 - 4:00 the first week in October. It has been slow, but expect more people to come in when all operations have moved into Library East.

12/03  One or two people come in every afternoon we are open. Since
traffic  will  be much heavier after the Holiday break, I would like to keep open Tuesdays at least through next semester.

2/26/04 Remain open on Tuesday afternoons with the average number of visitors at 5 or six per day. Some staff stop in every week to see what we are doing, and last week (2/24) we had an outside visitor that stayed for over 2 hours and plans on coming back on  March 9.

Staff training:
Primary Contact:
John Freund  johfreu@mail.uflib.ufl.edu

Objectives:
  • By January 1, 2004, have in place plans for workshops and classes, open and available to library staff in the area of simple book construction and repair, binding, book arts and other conservation issues.

  • Expand the workshops, if appropriate to cover areas if interest and need in specific departments. For example, Circulation might request a short workshop showing student shelvers the appropriate items to route to conservation.

Progress:
No progress as of 11/03.
12/03. Staff in the branches have been asking about basic repair training. It may be time to have a couple of those classes first, then gauge the interest in other training. Right now and until the moves and library consolidation levels off, everyone is too busy for this type of project.

2/27/04  Talked briefly to Trudi DiTrollio and asked for her input. She thought it was a good idea and we will have a meeting later in March to discuss possibilities and details. Progress on this goal has been delayed because of the general organizational problems involving the moves and closing of Library West. I am thinking that summer may be a good time to start these classes which will mean this goal will need to be carried over to the next year.
