   SIGN SYSTEM REPORT
    Marston Science Library
    Signage Recommendations

For all signs, we recommend they be:
  1. As tamper proof and permanently attached as possible for the type of sign
  2. Have rounded corners
  3. Use the same typeface as is being used now (i.e., Geneva?)
  4. Have white letters on a dark gray or black background

Physical types of signs are:
  • Freestanding
  • Wall mounted
  • Hanging
  • Desk-top
  • Projecting stack end signs

Signs themselves are:
  • Permanent lettering
  • Moveable/changeable lettering
  • Sheet holders

Locations and types of signs:
  1. Elevators
    • Color coded directory giving brief description of floor contents - wall mounted, permanent & moveable lettering
    • "Building exit is on second level" next to 2nd level button - wall mounted, permanent lettering

  2. Stairwells
    • Color coded identification of level - wall mounted, permanent lettering
    • "Building exit is on second level" - wall mounted, permanent lettering
    • "Staff only" for freight elevator stairwell - wall mounted, permanent lettering

  3. By elevators
    • Floor plan for floor with walls, fire exits, restrooms and room numbers applied permanently
    • Stack ranges and other information should be staff applyable and removeable
    • Floor directory
    • Second level should also have color coded directory giving brief description of floor contents - wall mounted, permanent & moveable lettering

  4. Selected pillars
    • Varying information - sheet holders

  5. Wall facing double entrance doors
    • "Welcome to the Marston Science Library" - wall mounted, permanent lettering

  6. Wall to right of entrance gates
    • Directory: People, Departments, Map Library, Copy Center, etc. - wall mounted, permanent & moveable lettering

  7. Foyer
    • Directional arrows, announcements - free standing, moveable lettering

  8. Entrance doors & glass walls
    • Regular library hours - permanent lettering
    • Announcements, special hours, etc. - sheet holders

  9. Entrance/Exit gates
    • "Entrance/NO! NO! NO!" and "Exit/NO! NO! NO!" on gate arms - permanent, stick on, replace approx. 1x/year.
    • "Entrance/NO! NO! NO!" and "Exit/NO! NO! NO!" possibly, hanging above gates (check with designers for visibility & height) - hanging, permanent lettering
    • Note: These signs should not be discreet white-on-dark gray/black; they should be more like red-on-screaming yellow.

  10. Service desks
    • "Librarian will return in a few moments" - desk-top, permanent and/or sheet holders
    • "Reference service is available on 2nd level..." - desk-top, permanent and/or sheet holders
    • Rack with campus map above it on pillar to left of Circulation Desk - wall mounted, sheet holder
    • Plexiglass or glass countertop covers to protect countertops & information sheets

  11. Hanging signs on all floors
    • Directional arrows to restrooms and water fountains
    • Directional arrows to elevators/stairwells
    • Directional arrows to photocopiers
    • Directional arrows to the Map Library
    • Above Circulation Desk: "Reserves" and "Check out" - hanging, permanent lettering

  12. Stack ends
    • Card holders for those pillars that mask the ends of stacks
    • Plastic covers for stack end cards
    • Projecting signs to indicate: Indexes/Journals, Reference, Patents

  13. Permanent "Library Staff Only" signs to replace paper ones we are now using.

  14. Level 1 compact shelving use instructions - permanently mounted and on cards
