1. Updates and Reports from Departments
 

• Access Services

David Hickey reported that there have been delays and problems with E-Reserves because of technical problems.  They hope the problems are worked out now.
Some items from Special Collections have been moved to Paged Collection.
• Documents

Jan Swanbeck announced that the GIS interviews were completed. They are now waiting on comments from people present at the interviews.
She also said the lighting project in Marston Science Library will now include the first floor, and this won’t be completed until the end of February. They are currently trying to decide how this will affect access to the Maps Library.
• Humanities & Social Sciences Services

Jana Ronan reported that the English classes are signing up for library orientation.
• Marston Science

Carol Drum reported that their circulation desk was not fully staffed. They are currently interviewing for two positions.
Workstations have replaced dumb terminals on all floors.
The reference staff is doing an incredible job of retrieving from the third floor during the lighting project. They usually have a 15-minute retrieval time. The patrons seem happy with the process.
• Special Collections

John Ingram announced that his department is being renamed the Department of Special and Area Collections. The library is working to better support UF’s classes. The Latin American Collection, African Studies and Judaica will all be under the new name.
The first couple of weeks of the semester were very slow, but more patrons are beginning to use the collections.
Richard Phillips said that LAC has had problems with the cleaning staff leaving doors unlocked after hours. He has reported this to Rob Roberts several times.


2. Status Reports
 

• Electronic Reserves—As he mentioned earlier, David Hickey reported that E-Reserves have experienced some systems problems, but hope that they are corrected now. Carol Drum discussed some problems MSL has run into with their E-Reserves. These include professors who download web pages, print them out and then want the MSL staff to scan them to put up as E-Reserves. Some professors’ web pages cannot be viewed with Netscape, only with Microsoft Explorer. She said it was also necessary to break files into 10 page increments per scan. More pages make it very time-consuming to download over a modem.
• Interactive Reference—Colleen Seale reported that the interactive reference committee is evaluating software to determine what would best suit the library’s needs, how it would be utilized and what parameters are wanted.

Jana has been looking at a Moo program combined with a Java applet that operates like a real-time chat room. She currently has a web page set up to test the program.
• Web Pages—Carol encouraged everyone to look at the Public Services Division web page and offer suggestions. The university’s Copyright page will be linked to the page when it completed. David Hickey also stated that the Circulation Manual is linked to the PS web page at http://web.uflib.ufl.edu/ps/Main/Circ_Manual_TOC.htm .
• Other
o Jan handed out bookmarks advertising the Florida Electronic Federal Depository Library. Barbara Hood designed the bookmark, which will be distributed to other depository libraries in the state.
o Leilani Freund reported that the PSITC group she chairs sponsored a demonstration about security on public workstations to public services staff who maintain computers. Marvin Crabb and Tom Caswell headed the presentation and Michael Howell provided the equipment. A follow-up session or one-on-one help may be scheduled.
o Alice Primack announced that the semester’s orientations have ended. She did new workshops for transfer and new students in the sciences and humanities. She has talked with professors who are doing distance learning courses and was able to get library information added to the courses. National Library Week is scheduled for April 9-15. A group is currently forming to plan displays for this week.
o Carol Drum said there have been many problems with patrons using Wiley journals. It appears that only one user may access the journals at one time. There are other problems, and Carol suggested that a representative from Wiley be contacted to discuss the problems. Rich Bennett said he thought the library had a basic license agreement, which only allows one user. An expanded license would allow more simultaneous users, but the cost would have to be explored. It was suggested that information on each license agreement be put together to show how many simultaneous users were allowed, what years the journals were available and did they offer full text or abstracts.
o John Ingram discussed Net Library, which offers 10,000 titles. Solinet will buy the entire collection and make it available to institutions that are interested in it. The price per use will depend on how many users sign up. One copy will be set aside for use by one user (out of all the subscribers) at a time. The database is totally searchable.
o Carol Turner encouraged the PSC members to identify staff who encounter copyright issues in their work and would benefit by participating in an online copyright tutorial that ALA is planning. The tutorial is free for ALA members and $25 for non-members.
o Rita Smith is doing four 3-minute stories a month on NPR’s Recess show. Her stories, based on the Baldwin Collection, air on WUFT-FM.


3. Services and Procedures
 

• Reporting systems Problems Nights and Weekends—Rich went over the procedure for reporting network problems that occur during the weekends or nights. He said if it is an FCLA problem NERDC should be contacted (2-2061) and they will get in touch with someone at FCLA. He said he would talk with Bill to find out the proper procedure for reporting a library-based problem. Tom Caswell is available and able to fix local problems, such as rebooting the proxy server, on Sunday through Thursday evenings.
• Promoting Use of CRL Services—Carol handed out an article promoting CRL services. She encouraged everyone to be familiar with the resources offered by CRL.

4. Reports on Activities Outside the Library
 

• FCLA and SUS—David announced that the online renewal service will have added features soon, including the ability for patrons see what items they have checked out at a specific library. A help service will also be available.
• Suzanne Brown announced that Flo Turcotte would be filling a half-time position at the Education library, as well as working half time in Special Collections.
• ALA Reports—Rich attended the J-STOR update. In February back issues of Science will be available. He also reported that an agreement, Cross-Ref, has been signed by most of the science publishers to provide cross-linking with all their articles and services. He isn’t sure how it will work if the institution doesn’t have a license agreement with a certain service that is included in Cross-Ref.
• Suzanne and Colleen attended the EBSCO and Ovid seminars.
• Alice said the Special Libraries Association will host a Webmastering seminar on February 11.


5. Misc.

Vicki asked that everyone have their systems liaisons check their departments’ computers to make sure they are set for the correct time zone. She also asked people reserving the conference room to check the reservation time in the room invitation memo section to make sure the correct time is reserved.
