Celebrate National Library Week at UF with the Smathers Libraries' 2011 Read-A-Thon
The UF George A. Smathers Libraries are looking for readers for its ninth annual Read-A-Thon to be held April 4-6 and entries for the fifth annual Edible Book Contest on April 7! The events are held in conjunction with National Library Week as designated by the National Library Association since 1959.
Read-A-Thon
Celebrate reading by sharing a story, poem or excerpt from a favorite book, or acting out a scene from a play during the George A. Smathers Libraries’ Read-A-Thon April 4-6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Mon & Wed) and 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Tues) on the Plaza of the Americas. The Read-A-Thon is a lively, fast-paced and casual celebration of reading.
Here’s how it works: On Monday and Wednesday, April 4- & 6, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., UF faculty, staff, students, and Gainesville community members read ten-minute segments from a favorite book. Tuesday is children's literature day and from 10:00-12:00 readers read to small groups of young children. Listeners meander in and out to listen for a few minutes or for an hour. There are all kinds of readings - adventure, mystery, humor, poetry, history, philosophy, children’s books, short stories, theater - you name it!
To sign up to be a reader, please consult the reading schedule to check for available time slots, then contact us to volunteer to read for an available time slot.

Edible Book Contest
You are invited to create an "edible book," and enter it in our contest. The only rules are it must be edible and must be somehow related to a book!
