Creating a pattern

  1. Push record to Catalog HOL(dings)
  2. Expand pattern from template
    1. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+E to open the template window
    2. Choose pattern by frequency
    3. Alter data in fields to represent the actual information from the journal
      1. typically enumeration and chronolgy fields
      2. example: expected will be v.65:no.1(2005:Jan.) template reads v.1:no.1(2000:Jan.)
  3. OR create pattern manually
    1. Create an 853 field
    2. Based upon knowledge of piece fill in values:
      1. 1st [$$a] and 2nd [$$b] levels of enumeration (typically v. and no.)
      2. Number of 2nd levels per 1st levels (if a quarterly then typically 4) [$$u]
      3. Continuity value (c=continuous, r=restarts every year i.e. 12345 or 1234, 1) [$$v]
      4. 1st [$$i] and 2nd [$$j] levels of chronology (typically (year) and (month))
      5. Choose the frequency from a wide range of values [$$w]
      6. Add a field linking # (typically 1) [$$8]
    3. Create an 853X field
    4. Based upon expected piece fill in the values that correspond to the 853 subfields
      1. 1st [$$a] and 2nd [$$b] levels of enumeration
      2. 1st [$$i] and 2nd [$$j] levels of chronology
      3. The expected date for an item is determined by the start date $$3 in the pattern and the value present in the Claim date of the Subscription (Tab 2)
      4. Starting date:
If you expect the first issue to come in sometime in mid-January of 2006 then use the value 20060115 [$$3]
      5. Subscription linking #: inks the pattern to the subscription in the Serials module [$$9]
      6. Add a field linking # (typically 1) [$$8]
  4. Test the pattern
    1. Print Preview to verify accuracy of pattern
    2. CTRL+P will call up a box with a list of print options
    3. Choose 85X PRINT to generate a print preview of what the pattern will look like
    4. If this does not generate the desired list, then alter the pattern and try again
  5. Save record to server
  6. Push record to Serials Module (ALT+S)
  7. Click on Open Items in the Subscription window of the Serials module
