The University of Florida Smathers Libraries is proud to host SolarCycle Week, January 25th – 31st, 2010.  The Libraries have partnered with the University of Florida Office of Sustainability to bring you this week, which is aimed at promoting solar energy and cycling. Below you will find information regarding the activities that are being planned. The centerpiece of SolarCycle Week will be a presentation given by the Solar Cyclists; three cyclists who have been cycling around the world in an attempt to raise awareness of the potential for solar energy to provide a sustainable solution to global energy needs.  Here is a link to their website, the SolarCycle Diaries  http://www.thesolarcyclediaries.com/So come check it out so we can cycle our way to a better tomorrow!

                                           Monday, January 25th                                          

US Department of Energy Database Workshop

Learn how to better utilize the many Department of Energy (DOE) databases with this free 3-hour, hands-on training session. The presenter is Tim Byrne with the Office of Scientific and Technical Information for the US Department of Energy. Participants will learn to navigate DOE databases, develop query formulation, and database-specific search techniques.  Participants will become familiar with major web sites and learn to use databases through individual and federated searching. These are .gov resources freely accessible to anyone with an Internet connection.  Mr. Byrne will be highlighting information that is available from 14 federal agencies and the international scientific community.

"The Great Squeeze" Film Showing - 7:00pm - Reitz Union Auditorium

Join us to see "The Great Squeeze: Surviving the Human Project" - an award winning film that was shown during the United "Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Released in March 2009, The Great Squeeze was selected at 14 film festivals around the world and won two awards for best documentary. This award winning documentary takes a look at the real price that we are paying for fossil fuels. Throughout the film, viewers also explore the collapse of past civilizations to offer real solutions from previous mistakes. This is an event not to be missed!

Cycle into Gainesville with the Solar Cyclists - 12:00pm - Alachua - BP Station on south side of town.

You are welcome to join the Solar Cyclists as they ride into Gainesville on Wednesday, January 27th. You can meet them at the BP station on the south side of town at 12:00 Noon.

Thursday, January 28th

SolarCycle Week Expo - 10:30am - 2:00pm - Plaza of the Americas

Explore the exciting world of renewable solar energy, cycling, and sustainability with the SolarCycle Week Expo to be held on the Plaza of the Americas with exciting demonstrations and compelling information on switching to a sustainable energy future.

Gainesville Regional Utilities Solar Tariff Presentation - 11:00am - 11:45am - Plaza of the Americas

Kathy Viehe , Assistant General Manager of GRU Strategic Planning will be speaking on GRU's groundbreaking Solar Tariff program. He will present general information on the solar photovoltaic feed-in-tariff— the first of its kind in the nation, and its impacts on the Gainesville community. Regan will be available to answer questions after the presentation.

SolarCycle Diaries Presentation – 11:45am - 12:30pm  - Smathers Library East Room 1A

Come hear about the Solar Cyclists’ spectacular journey around the world; what they have discovered about the use of solar energy in other countries; and how they have managed for 9 months to sustain themselves.  If you have an interest in promoting renewable energy or in the human dimension of living from the heart and undertaking such a journey, this presentation is for you. There will also be a Solar Bag provided by g24 Innovations as a door prize at the presentation. Don’t miss it! Spread the word!

Meet the Solar Cyclists and Q&A Session  – 12:30pm - 1:00pm - Smathers Library East Room 1A

After the presentation everyone will have the opportunity to meet the cyclists and ask them questions about their journey.

The Solar Cyclists will be at the Expo with their bicycles and will be available to answer your questions.

Join Bikes and More Cycling Club and cycle out of Gainesville with the Solar Cyclists- 10AM - Meet at the Reitz Union Traffic Circle next to the Parking Garage.

Join the Solar Cyclists as they ride out of Gainesville on Saturday. Riders will meet at the Reitz Union traffic circle, Reitz Union Drive, next to the Parking Garage.
