Archives & Manuscripts in the Baldwin Library: Margaret Sidney
Margaret Sidney was the pen name of Harriet Mulford Stone Lothrop, author
of The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew (1881). The book
proved such a popular success that eleven more "Pepper" books were written
and were treasured by young readers well into the 20th century. Sidney
married Daniel Lothrop of Boston, whose publishing firm, D. Lothrop and
Company, published her work. Upon his death, Sidney managed the publishing
company for several years before selling the business to another Boston
publishing firm.
