Billy Bowlegs

When the Expedition party encounters the Seminole woman, Nancy, at Fort Shackleford she is accompanied by her granddaughter, who is identified as the daughter of Billy Bowlegs. This may be a reference to Billy Bowlegs III (1862–1965). Sources are often contradictory about Billy Bowlegs III's family, with some listing his mother as a Seminole woman named Lucy and some indicating that it was Nancy. It does not seem possible that these are references to Little Nancy and Lucy Osceola, whom the party met with Old Nancy, because those women were too young to have been mother to Billy Bowlegs III if it is true that he was born in 1862. However, it should be noted that Old Nancy is often identified as his grandmother.
