Cape Florida Lighthouse

Cape Florida Light, 1886; source: University of Miami Libraries Special CollectionsThe Expedition party went with Captains Ned Pent and John Saunders on the schooner "Margaret" and landed at Cape Florida, which is on the southern end of Biscayne Bay. The group climbed to the top of the Cape Florida Lighthouse, which had been constructed in 1825. The lighthouse had been replaced by a new lighthouse on Fowey Rocks in 1878 and the Cape Florida Lighthouse was not operating and abandoned in 1892. Commodore Ralph M. Munroe told the group that the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club leased the abandoned lighthouse from the U.S. Government. Since 1892, the lighthouse has been renovated multiple times and is now preserved in the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park as the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County.
