Okaloacoochee Slough Causeway

On March 18, the Expedition party crossed the Okaloacoochee Slough using an old government causeway that had been "... constructed about 1835." This is probably a reference to a causeway constructed in 1855 by the U.S. Army. In February of that year, Captain Arnold Elzey's companies constructed a road from Fort Simon Drum to Fort Deynaud, and at the same time they also built the causeway across the slough about two miles north of Fort Simon Drum. Elzey used the causeway to travel east towards Waxy Hadjo's landing on the western edge of the Everglades, and there he constructed Fort Shackleford. It is possible that the Expedition party used the same path in 1892 to reach Fort Shackleford that Elzey's troops had used in 1855.
