Cocoanut Grove

Some residents of Coconut Grove; source: State Archives of Florida, Florida MemoryCocoanut Grove was a settlement near Miami on the Biscayne Bay. The Expedition party spent several days exploring the Bay, and visited Cocoanut Grove over several days. They spent time at the hotel of Charles Peacock, and also visited with Commodore Ralph M. Munroe, author Kirk Munroe, and others. The community was annexed by the city of Miami in 1925, and is known today as the neighborhood of Coconut Grove.

A note on the spelling of "Cocoanut Grove" : The authors of the Expedition texts were very consistent in spelling the name of the town as "Cocoanut Grove" rather than "Coconut Grove" which is how it is spelled today. Because of this consistency throughout the texts, the spelling of "Cocoanut Grove" is retained here.
