Cuba

In 1892, the island of Cuba in the Caribbean was a colony of Spain, but many American companies and individuals had strong business ties to the island. In the 1860s after the Civil War, the International Ocean Cable Company installed an underwater telegraph cable from Punta Rassa, Florida, to Havana, Cuba, which enabled faster communication. Alonzo Moses makes reference to this cable when passing Punta Rassa. In 1898, U.S. defeated Spain in the Spanish-American War and over the next 60 years U.S. directed much of Cuba's affairs directly or indirectly. Many of the people and places mentioned throughout these texts would become involved in the 1898 war.
