Cutler

Cutler was a community south of Miami on the Biscayne Bay that existed from the 1880s through the early 1900s. Settler William Fuzzard established his homestead in 1883, squatting on land that was part of the Perrine Grant. Fuzzard was probably responsible for naming Cutler after his friend and fellow settler, Dr. William Cutler. Around 1884 Fuzzard created a trail connecting Cutler with Cocoanut Grove. This trail, which is now known as Old Cutler Road, was widened and declared a public road in 1895. When Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railroad bypassed Cutler in 1903 the town died soon after. The Expedition party visited Fuzzard's land, as well as the land of squatter John Addison, which was partially on land known by the Seminoles as the Big Hunting Grounds.
