J.W. Ewan

J.W. (John William) Ewan came to Miami in 1874 and soon after was hired by the owners of Fort Dallas, the Biscayne Bay Company, to manage the property as their agent in residence. He operated a trading post at Fort Dallas, and he served as postmaster in the late 1870s. He lived at the fort throughout the 1880s until 1891 when Julia Tuttle purchased the property, and then he moved to his homestead in Cocoanut Grove. He also lived for a while at the Peacock Inn. He was known as the "Duke of Dade" and served in the state legislature in the 1870s and 1880s. He served for many years as a United States commissioner.
