Samuel Filer

Ingraham and party visited Sam Filer's ten acres of land on Biscayne Bay near Lemon City, mentioning that Filer was a resident of Key West who paid a family to manage the land on the Bay. Sam Filer made regular trips to and from Key West and his schooner, the "Joshua Skinner," transported mail and supplies between Key West and Miami. At the time of the Ingraham party's visit, Filer grew mostly lemons on his land, but also limes, alligator pears, sappadilloes, and mangoes. It is possible that Lemon City was named because of the lemon grove planted by Filer. Sam Filer also worked as a banker in Key West. The Expedition texts also refer to the fact that his nephew, William Filer, operated a store in Lemon City.
