William Freeman

Freeman; source: University of Miami Libraries Special CollectionsIngraham and party encountered William Freeman, who guided them through a hammock near Lemon City. Freeman was an early settler on Little River, about a mile north of Lemon City, and he cultivated tomatoes. He probably settled in the area in 1887. In the book, The Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes of Southern Florida, author Patsy West describes how her great-grandfather, William Freeman, lived at Little River in 1888 when her grandmother, Ethel, was born. Freeman was an agent for the government relating to homesteads. Census and other records show him living in Lemon City in 1900 and 1910.
