The Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf coast of Florida are described briefly by Alonzo Church as the Expedition members were heading south towards Fort Myers on the steamer "Tarpon". There are other references to the Gulf in the texts, particularly when discussing the water bodies in and around the state.
