Hendry Family

There are instances in the texts where references are made to the Hendrys or the Hendry family. Most of these references refer to the brothers, George and Frank Hendry, who accompanied the Expedition from Fort Myers to Fort Shackleford, acting as guides. The Hendrys were a prominent family in Southwest Florida. George and Frank Hendry's father was Captain Francis Asbury Hendry (1833-1917), one of the founders of Fort Myers and a leading cattle rancher in the state. Their brother, Louis Hendry, operated the Hendry House, the top hotel in the city at the time. Hendry County, Florida, is named for Francis A. Hendry, and he also founded the town of LaBelle, Florida. The Hendry family interacted with the Seminoles regularly. In the late 1870s, at the request of a young Native American, Billy Conapachee, the family took him in to raise and educate him along with their own children. Many years later, when the Seminoles received the news that Francis A. Hendry was dying in 1917, Billy and his brother, Billy Fiewel, honored the man by visiting him before he died.
