The Expedition texts include references to Duncan U. Fletcher and the Florida Fiber Company of Jacksonville. They also mention the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West System, which included rail and steam. With its location on the Atlantic and the St. Johns River, the city was an early commercial center and major transportation hub in the state for shipping, rail and steamboat. The population was 17,201 according to the 1890 Census.
