The Loxahatchee River flows west out of the Jupiter Inlet. Jupiter was the northern terminus of the Jupiter & Lake Worth Railway, also known as the Celestial Railroad, which ran south to Juno on Lake Worth. The Expedition party traveled on this railway heading north. While in Jupiter, the Expedition party ate on Captain Vaill's Floating Hotel, the Steamer "Rockledge," and Sydney O. Chase and Wallace R. Moses climbed the Jupiter Lighthouse to view the inlet and surrounding region. The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was completed in 1860 and is considered to be the oldest structure in the county.
