Jupiter Lighthouse

View of the Jupiter inlet and lighthouse; source: State Archives of Florida, Florida MemoryThe lighthouse was completed in 1860 and is considered to be the oldest structure in Palm Beach County. It was originally designed by Army Lt. George G. Meade, who became a general and defeated Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg in the Civil War. The lighthouse had a 105-step spiral stairway to the lamp at the top. While in Jupiter, the Expedition party ate on Captain Vaill's Floating Hotel, the Steamer "Rockledge," and Sydney O. Chase and Wallace R. Moses climbed the Jupiter Lighthouse to view the inlet and surrounding region.
