Key West, Florida

View of Key West; source: State Archives of Florida, Florida MemoryThe Expedition party did not visit Key West in the Florida Keys, but the Expedition texts include several references to the city. Key West was the major transportation hub and commercial center for South Florida. Many of the southern settlements, including Fort Myers and Miami, relied on Key West for goods, trade, and communication. The population was 18,080 according to the 1890 Census, making it the most populous city in the state.
